Stonemasonry Workshop for Trail Building in Colorado
This Dry Stonemasonry Event Calendar includes links to organizations hosting dry stonemasonry workshops in addition to dry stonemasonry presentations in the U.S. and other countries.
Organizations and people leading drystone masonry events:
These dry stonemasonry workshops are led by Drystone Joe, the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (in the countries of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales), The Stone Trust (in Vermont and other locations in the U.S.), The Dry Stone Conservancy (In Kentucky and other locations in the U.S), The Dry Stone Walls Association of Australia, Dry Stone Walling Association of Japan, and the European Dry Stone Network Association
Some presentation events are online, and the login information will hopefully be provided by the host organization upon registration. Information about the hands-on, in-person events will include for example their location, date, time, registration requirements and cost if any. Furthermore, if tools or other materials such as rain gear are needed during a workshop, they will be listed here or by the host organization.
A typical dry stonemasonry workshop event will include:
- information and examples of manual stone tools and their safe usage, for example hammers and chisels
- types of stone as well as why and how to shape them,
- best practices in dry stone construction methodology, for example staggering face stone joints
- stone work site logistics such as staging stone prior to construction, and
- hands-on moving, shaping, and setting of stone.
I took my first drystone workshop in 1997 in Kentucky, led by Richard Tufnell from the DSWA. Subsequently, I have taken a wide variety of workshops on the craft.I have been leading workshops since 2001. In conclusion, I believe the hands-on workshops are the best way to learn the craft, regardless of location, type of stone, language, etc.
Keep checking back for upcoming stonemasonry workshops and stonemasonry presentation events with Drystone Joe and others in 2026!
