This is the Drystone Joe stonemasonry portfolio of projects I designed and built during 2003-2025. Most importantly, stonemasonry has been my career since 1997. I design, restore, and build a wide range of mortared stonemasonry and dry stonemasonry features using best-known practices for durable, safe, long-lasting, and also attractive stonework. In other words, classic rock.
These are certainly my 100 Greatest Hits! from my first 22 years as a business owner. The work reflects the methods I learned during seven years of apprenticing with master stonemasons in Kentucky. In addition, these stonemasonry photos also reflect changes and evolution in the styles of stonework I do. For example, one distinctive characteristic of my stonework is that I align my stone landscape installations with cardinal directions, lunar cycle, and solar cycle in as many ways possible. My stone landscaping in Santa Fe, New Mexico during the last 6 years draws upon the archeoastronomy traditions in the southwest.
Process That Generated The Drystone Joe Stonemasonry Portfolio:
Firstly, I talk with prospective clients to discuss their ideas, look at images of stonemasonry including colors and sizes of stone, and envision a timeline. Secondly, I measure and photograph the site and assess a range of site characteristics such as access, underground utilities, function, view, etc. Thirdly, I propose a budget. Subsequently, once a client agrees on a budget, I design imagery of the project or build to an existing drawing provided by landscape architects, architects, engineers, or landscape designers. Finally, I assemble a crew of qualified builders specific to each project and build it with them. I remain involved in all phases of hands-on construction during each stonemasonry project.
Historical Precedents That Influenced The Drystone Joe Stonemasonry Portfolio:
Drystone Joe Stonemasonry Portfolio = Classic Rock
In conclusion, my stonemasonry installations are built to last. Likewise, they include astronomical alignments and markings similar to older, global traditions in stonemasonry. As a result, classic rock!
